WET is happy to announce the open call for our second Small Film School, a peer support platform for artists and experimental filmmakers working on a new moving image piece.
Across six days, between April and July 2026, participants will meet and discuss works in progress, sharing ideas and material with one another. External guests will lead workshops in editing and directing experimental films. The aim is for makers to develop their work in a communal setting, through in-depth feedback, and skill-sharing, forming a supportive, critical environment. We want to support exciting new work!
The sessions for 2026 will take place on the following dates. Please note that participants must be able to attend all of the sessions.
Thursday 16th & Friday 17th April
Thursday 30th April
Thursday 21st May
Monday 15th June
Thursday 2nd July
What do we offer?
– Six day-long sessions, for six participants.
– An environment for sharing works-in-progress, and receiving advice and feedback.
– Workshops from artists, filmmakers and educators.
What is the application process?
– Fill out the form below before the deadline of Friday 13th March at 23:59.
– Applications will be assessed by WET member Nick Thomas and filmmaker Katarina Jazbec. We aim to respond by Monday 30th March.
Does it cost anything?
There is no fee for applying, or for participation. Participants must cover their own travel expenses. We are happy to provide letters of support for funding applications.
Eligibility/profile:
– You must be registered as living in the Netherlands.
– Collaborative practices, duos and collectives are welcome to apply.
– There are no educational or qualification requirements. We encourage applicants from all backgrounds.
– You must not be currently studying at a higher education institution, or post-academic residency (e.g. Rijksakademie, Jan van Eyck Academie).
– We are looking for works-in-progress, where there is scope to shape and develop the work through group discussions and workshops.
– The project must be predominantly moving-image focused. We are open to a broad range of experimental films, video works, and installations, but we will not select projects in which the moving image plays only a minor role.
– The Small Film School was conceived with smaller budget, independent and experimental projects in mind. We are unlikely to choose high-budget film productions, or straightforwardly narrative fiction films or documentaries. For an idea of the kind of work we are interested in, please see past screenings and exhibitions on our website: www.wetfilm.org.
– Please don’t use AI to write your application. We appreciate that applications are a drain on artists’ time, and that AI can be a labour saving tool, but we have tried to make the process as simple as possible. We value the ideas behind projects, and the way that artists express those ideas, and find that AI makes applications far more generic and similar to one another.
