‘Magnets’ is a group show organised around the question: How do cultural shifts change the way artists work? Drawing on the artistic research of WET member Sophie Bates, this exhibition aims to open up a discursive space for audiences to question collaborative filmmaking and the subject/author relationship as well as the formation of moral and ethical standards in artistic and filmic production.
Sophie Bates is a British artist based in Rotterdam, who works with video, film, performance and photography. Her works explore intimate human connections, depicting the way people relate through body language, humour, ‘performances of courtesy’, the failure of language and finding space to be oneself. Her documenting practice is a way to make sense of experiences and revisit them. She is concerned with understanding herself and others better through her art practice.
Cheryl Dunye is a Liberian-American film director, producer, screenwriter, editor and actress. Dunye’s work often concerns themes of race, sexuality, and gender, particularly issues relating to black lesbians.
Julika Rudelius is an internationally exhibiting German-born video and performance artist who lives and works in Amsterdam, and New York. Rudelius’ photographic and video work examines complex notions of emotional dependency, social power, abuse, identity, and cultural hegemony.

‘Magnets’ is een groepstentoonstelling, georganiseerd rond de vraag: Hoe veranderen culturele wijzigingen de manier waarop kunstenaars werken? Op basis van het artistieke onderzoek van WET-lid Sophie Bates wil deze tentoonstelling een discursieve ruimte openen voor het publiek om zowel het collaboratief filmmaken en de subject/auteur relatie, als de vorming van morele en ethische normen in artistieke en filmische productie te ondervragen.
Sophie Bates is een Britse kunstenaar, gevestigd in Rotterdam, en werkt met video, film, performance en fotografie. Haar werk onderzoekt intieme menselijke connecties en toont de manier waarop mensen met elkaar omgaan door middel van lichaamstaal, humor, ‘performances of courtesy’, de mislukking van taal en het vinden van ruimte om zichzelf te zijn. Haar praktijk van documenteren is een manier om ervaringen te begrijpen en opnieuw te bekijken. Via haar kunstpraktijk wil ze meer verstand van zichzelf en ook anderen krijgen.
Cheryl Dunye is een Liberiaanse-Amerikaanse filmregisseur, producent, scenarioschrijver, redacteur en actrice. Dunye’s werk gaat vaak over thema’s als ras, seksualiteit en gender, in het bijzonder over zwarte lesbiennes.
Julika Rudelius is een video- en performancekunstenaar, geboren in Duitsland, en zij exposeert op internationaal niveau. Zij woont en werkt in Amsterdam en New York. Rudelius’ foto- en videowerk onderzoekt complexe noties van emotionele afhankelijkheid, sociale macht, misbruik, identiteit en culturele hegemonie.
