Reading and watching group
OPEN CALL: Reading and watching group
WET is happy to announce our first reading and watching group! Join us to explore histories of radical cinema.
This year, we will be asking the question, “How to make films that not only question but remake the world?” One starting point is the work of Maria Barea, a Peruvian self-taught filmmaker who was involved with several feminist and indigenous groups. From Barea’s work, we will branch out to look at filmmakers from many other contexts, asking what we can learn from these radical examples.
To better understand the context in which these films were made, and to think about their relevance today, we decided to start a reading and watching group. Together we will discuss historical texts and those written from a contemporary perspective, for example placing Barea’s films in the context of the Third Cinema tradition – a term coined in the 1960s by Argentinian filmmakers Fernando Solanas and Octavio Getino to denote revolutionary cinema existing outside Hollywood (First Cinema) and European auteur cinema (Second Cinema). As well as reading, we will also watch selected films together, digging deeper into filmmakers’ ouvres and exploring the works of their contemporaries.
Who should join the reading group?
We are looking for people who are curious about radical, experimental cinema, and who want to learn more in a group setting. You do not need any specific qualifications or expertise: WET will facilitate the sessions but we are not experts! We see this as a peer learning situation where we will all benefit from each others’ input. We want people to bring their own ideas, interpretations, and energy to the table.Â
Practical information:
- Participation is free. Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
- The group is limited to eight participants.
- The language of the reading group is English.
- Sessions will take place in our space in Rotterdam between April and December and will last around 2-3 hours.Â
- Participants are asked to commit to all six of the sessions where possible. Specific dates will be organised within the group to best accommodate everyone.
- Please sign up with a short statement (max. 100 words) about why you want to take part to our email info@wetfilm.org. Alternatively, you can record a video or voice note of max. 2 minutes.
