About us + contact
WET is a Rotterdam-based collective and project space for artists’ moving image, founded in 2019 by Marta Hryniuk, Erika Roux, Anna Łuczak, Nick Thomas and Sophie Bates. We provide a platform for public events, with a focus on artworks which challenge existing orthodoxies and propose alternative perspectives, and support the production of moving image works.
WET first operated as a nomadic collective, assisting each other in the creation of new works, and in mid-2019 began to organise events in external spaces. Later we became a physical venue, and in 2023 registered as Stichting (foundation) WET.
As a collective, we have a strong collaborative approach to artistic research and programming, which we translate into public moments. From the outset of WET we shared ideas around the type of work we find urgent and exciting; our aim is to stimulate the conversation around moving image work in the Netherlands and internationally. We also support artists in various ways, ranging from feedback sessions to acting as a producer on new works.
Marta Hryniuk is Polish artist, filmmaker and programmer based in Rotterdam. She studied Fine Arts at the University of Arts in Poznań, Academy of Art in Szczecin, and the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam. Her works bridge documentary film, artists’ moving image and installation. She works in a long-term collaboration with Nick Thomas. Since 2019, they have been increasingly involved in Ukraine, making films, and engaging in volunteer humanitarian efforts, an ongoing relationship which shapes their current artistic output. She co-run Silverado (2013-17), currently is a member of Filmwerkplaats and co-programmes Field Recordings.
Nick Thomas
Nick Thomas is an artist based in Rotterdam, originally from the UK, working with moving image and sound. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam. He has been involved with various artist-run projects, such as Transmission Gallery and Glasgow Open House Arts Festival. His work tackles relationships between form and politics, with a particular interest in the aesthetics of coexistence, radical histories, and self-organising. For the past several years, he has been working in collaboration with Marta Hryniuk.
Born 1984, Łódź, PL. Lives and works in Rotterdam. She graduated from Piet Zwart Institute (MFA), and Willem de Kooning Academy (BA). Łuczak was artist-in-residence at the Jan van Eyck Academie in 2017/18. She works with video in combination with spatial elements. Through her projects she explores subjective, fragmented and intuitive approaches to collective histories and their influence to daily life.
Erika Roux (FR) is a visual artist and filmmaker based in Amsterdam. She studied at the Gerrit Rietveld academy in Amsterdam and the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam. She was artist-in-residence at the Jan van Eyck academie in 2021/22. Her work looks at situations and social spaces, which – by their own existence and action – challenge us in the way we perform, produce, and live together. Filmmaking and (script) writing become a process of encounter. With a rather intuitive and personal approach to these mediums, she creates a specific bond with individuals, a group of people or a community.
Sophie is a British artist working with video, performance, writing, photography and live events. Sophie graduated with a Master in Fine Art from the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, 2018 and holds a Bachelor in Fine Art from Newcastle University, 2016. Her practice is about relating other people’s experiences, performances of courtesy, the failure of language and finding space to be a “self”. Her habitual documenting practice is a way to understand or make sense of experiences and go back to them.
