How to Get from Space to Place is an episodic exhibition program for 2021-22, consisting of five core parts with moving image artists from the Netherlands and abroad. The program focuses on the notion of ‘place’ and what that means in the means in the contemporary moment.
For the third episode we will present three films by artist and filmmaker Kurdwin Ayub (one on our website, one as an installation in our space, and one as a screening). Born in Kurdish Iraq in 1990, Kurdwinâs family relocated to Vienna when she was one. In her films, she incorporates this family history into her work, using humour and intimate depictions of her surroundings as ways to refuse stereotypical images of migration, cultural heritage and belonging.
Family Holiday (2012) is a short film consisting of 17 scenes in which Kurdwin captures impressions of her holiday with relatives in Kurdistan. Paradise! Paradise! (2016) is a feature-length film in which she follows her father to the city of Dohuk where he intends to visit relatives and buy a property. Intimate family scenes are intertwined with chats to real estate agents and soldiers engaged in armed conflict. LOLOLOL (2020) is set in Vienna and takes us to an art opening. This time the protagonists arenât family members, but instead two young women aspiring to be part of the Viennese art scene. The screening of LOLOLOL on the WET website is accompanied by a recorded conversation with WET members Sophie Bates and Anna Ćuczak.
Unfortunately the WET space is not currently wheelchair accessible. We hope to have a working elevator in the building in the near future. Please let us know if you have any other access requirements.
You must bring a valid Covid QR code for entry.
