This publication brings together essays, interviews, and visual contributions that understand filmmaking as a political and collective act. Resulting from WET’s 2025 programme How to make films that not only question but remake the world?, there is an emphasis on making, and in particular the typically less visible aspects of filmmaking: the production methods, collaborations, and networks of relationships that enable and shape films. Paying close attention to form, the audiovisual practices reflected on here each understand that how we speak matters as much as what we speak about.

Across generations and geographies, the featured artists and filmmakers engage with feminist, decolonial, queer, anti-imperialist, and disability perspectives, amplifying voices often excluded from official histories and cinematic representations. The texts and works referenced demonstrate that a strong political impetus does not require didacticism, but can be formed through a commitment to reinvention, both of visual language and of production practices.

With contributions and films by Yulia Appen; Annabelle Aventurin; María Barea; Lorena Best, Julio Gonzales, Sara Lucia Guerrero, and Isabel Seguí; Yuliia Elyas; Marta Hryniuk; Med Hondo; Cannach MacBride; Alison O’Daniel; Sashko Protyah; Natalia Sorzano; Anastasia Shin; and Jaśmina Wójcik.
